Charlie Hartz: Week 12 Legislative Update

Dear Constituents,

It was another busy and productive week in Columbia, focused on delivering real results—strengthening public safety, protecting our children, and working to lower costs for South Carolina families.

Here’s a look at what we worked on last week and what it means for you:

Public Safety & Protecting Our Communities

The House passed the Immigration Enforcement Partnership Act (H.4764), strengthening coordination between state and federal law enforcement. I supported this effort to give local officers clearer tools, training, and authority to work alongside federal partners and help ensure more consistent enforcement across South Carolina.

We also passed “Fargo’s Law” (H.3034), to increase penalties for those who harm law enforcement animals. These K9s and horses are highly trained partners that help track criminals and protect officers, and this ensures they are properly protected under the law.

The House also passed H.4804, strengthening penalties for the sexual exploitation of minors. I supported this legislation to close dangerous loopholes, increase minimum sentences, and ensure repeat offenders face real prison time.

Work also continued on legislation (H.3408), to prevent foreign adversaries from purchasing land in South Carolina—an important step in protecting our farmland, infrastructure, and long-term security.

Protecting Children & Strengthening Schools

The House unanimously passed the Tenure Accountability Act (H.4761), bringing more transparency and accountability to our public colleges and universities. This ensures regular evaluations, stronger performance standards, and better outcomes for students.

The House passed the Stop Harm from Addictive Social Media (SHASM) Act (H.4591), which puts safeguards in place to protect kids online. This bill targets addictive features like endless scrolling and autoplay, strengthens age verification, and gives parents more control over their children’s screen time and content.

Lowering Costs & Supporting Families

The House passed the Insurance Rate Reduction and Policyholder Protection Act (H.4817), a major step toward lowering premiums for South Carolina families. This legislation aims to crack down on fraud and abuse, increase transparency, and help homeowners reduce risk and lower costs over time.

Work also continued on the Pregnancy Care Tax Credit (S.32), which supports organizations providing real, on-the-ground help to mothers and families—from counseling to essential supplies—ensuring they have the resources to continue serving communities across our state.

Charlie Hartz: Week 11 Legislative Update

It was another busy and productive week in Columbia, focused on delivering real results—lowering costs, strengthening public safety, and supporting South Carolina families.

Here’s a look at what I worked on last week for District 81:

Affordability & Tax Relief

Last week, the South Carolina Boat Tax Act (H.3858)—a major step for boat owners across South Carolina—is now headed to the Governor’s desk. This legislation cuts boat property taxes nearly in half, eliminates double taxation on motors, and simplifies the process into one easy payment.

In a top boating state like ours, this is about fairness — lowering costs, cutting unnecessary red tape, and making it more affordable for families to enjoy our lakes and coast.

Work also continued in subcommittee on the Pregnancy Care Tax Credit Act (S.32), which takes a new approach to supporting women, children, and families. This bill encourages private donations to pregnancy resource centers, maternity homes, and programs that support victims of human trafficking—without growing government—while expanding access to critical services like prenatal care, housing, and parenting support.

The House also passed H.4799, to cut red tape and expand access to care for our veterans. By removing unnecessary barriers, this allows veterans’ homes to be built and expanded more quickly—helping ensure those who served can access care without delays.

Protecting Children & Strengthening Schools

The Stop Harm from Addictive Social Media (SHASM) Act (H.4591) advanced out of committee this week. The bill targets addictive features like autoplay videos and late-night notifications, while giving parents more control over their children’s screen time.

We also passed the Smart Heart Act (H.3831), ensuring schools are better prepared to respond to cardiac emergencies. By requiring accessible AEDs and trained staff, this legislation helps make sure help is there when every second matters.

Trump Highway Resolution Passes Senate

The Senate has officially passed the Donald J. Trump Highway Resolution.

President Donald J. Trump secured the federal permit that made I-73 shovel-ready after decades of delays—bringing jobs, economic growth, and stronger hurricane evacuation routes to the Grand Strand and Pee Dee.

Public Safety & Law Enforcement

The House passed the K9 Officer and Horse Protection Bill (H.3034) to strengthen penalties for those who harm law enforcement animals. These K9s are critical partners in keeping our communities safe.

Legislation addressing illegal street takeovers (H.4292) also moved forward this week. These reckless events put lives at risk and disrupt communities, and this bill gives law enforcement stronger tools to stop them.

Work also continues on legislation (H.3408) to prevent foreign adversaries from purchasing or owning farmland in South Carolina—an important step in protecting our food supply, strengthening our economy, and safeguarding our long-term security. Protecting our land is critical to South Carolina’s future.

Had a great visit with the Palmetto Nuclear Coalition to discuss the important role nuclear energy plays in our state’s future.

The $2.5 million Meals on Wheels campaign for Aiken Senior Life Services wrapped up, and the Aiken delegation recognized campaign leader, Bill Reynolds, with a joint resolution from the General Assembly.

North Augusta City Council Election Information

CANDIDATE FILING OPENS TODAY

The North Augusta Republican primary for 3 City Council seats (4-year term) will be held on Tuesday, June 9th, 2026. For all interested candidates, please see filing details below!

Candidates may file for the Republican primary between today, March 16th at 12pm, and Monday, March 30th at 12pm. These dates have been established by the City of North Augusta.

To file, candidates must submit the Statement of Intention of Candidacy & Party Pledge (which can be found at https://scvotes.gov/candidates/ under "Filing Forms") and filing fees to the county Republican Party chairperson in which county they reside. Please note: unless notarized, candidates must complete and sign the form in the presence of the county Chairman.

Charlie Hartz: Week 9 Legislative Update

It was One Big Beautiful Budget Week at the State House.

This week, we passed a strong conservative budget, advanced major tax cuts, and adopted key provisions from President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill so South Carolinians can keep more of what they earn.

More investment in infrastructure.

More tax relief for families.

More conservative results.

Here’s what it means for you:

State Budget: Investing in South Carolina’s Future

This week, I voted to pass a responsible state budget that strengthens infrastructure, supports our schools, and prepares South Carolina for continued growth.

Key investments include:

$500 million for roads, bridges, and interstate improvements
$95 million for K-12 school facilities and safety upgrades
$371+ million for higher education infrastructure
$175 million for construction of a comprehensive cancer hospital at MUSC
$70 million for airport improvements to support freight and tourism
$24.5 million for the Palmetto 800 system supporting emergency responders

The budget also supports teacher pay increases, workforce development programs, and scholarships for South Carolina students.

At the same time, it includes nearly $1 billion in total tax relief, helping families keep more of their hard-earned money.

Bringing Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” to South Carolina

I also supported the Tax Conformity Bill, which adopts key provisions from President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill so South Carolinians can benefit from these tax cuts.

This includes:

NO TAX ON TIPS
NO TAX ON OVERTIME
NO TAX ON SOCIAL SECURITY

These changes help ensure that South Carolina families and workers can fully benefit from the tax relief being delivered at the federal level.

Cutting South Carolina’s Income Tax

In addition, I voted to advance a major income tax reform plan that continues our work to lower taxes and grow South Carolina’s economy.

This legislation:

Cuts the state income tax rate from 6% to 5.21% immediately
Puts South Carolina on a path to a 1.99% flat income tax rate
Ensures over 77% of taxpayers will see a tax cut or no increase in their taxes

Lower taxes mean stronger economic growth, more job creation, and more opportunity for South Carolina families.

Charlie Hartz: Week 8 Legislative Update

Dear Constituents,

This week at the State House, House Republicans focused on legislation that strengthens public safety, helps families keep more of their hard-earned money, and puts South Carolina first. I remain committed to supporting policies that protect our communities, defend taxpayers, and keep South Carolina strong.

Here’s a quick update on the work taking place at the State House.

Fighting for Affordability

I will continue supporting policies that help South Carolinians keep more of what they earn and protect families from rising costs. This week, the House Ways and Means Committee advanced H.3368, South Carolina’s tax conformity legislation. The bill aligns the state’s tax code with federal provisions so taxpayers can benefit from federal tax relief measures, including provisions from the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” while also simplifying the filing process and preventing unexpected tax increases. I believe lower taxes and responsible fiscal policy are essential to keeping South Carolina affordable and competitive.

The Insurance Rate Reduction and Policyholder Protection Act (H.4817) advanced in the House Labor, Commerce, and Industry Committee this week. This legislation focuses on bringing greater transparency and oversight to insurance rate increases while strengthening protections for policyholders. The goal is to make coverage more affordable and accessible for South Carolina families while ensuring consumers are treated fairly and protected from unfair practices.

Public Safety Week at the State House

Protecting our communities and supporting law enforcement will always be one of my top priorities. This week, the House passed a juvenile crime reform package focused on holding violent offenders accountable and improving communication between law enforcement, schools, and families.

H.5120 helps law enforcement better identify repeat juvenile offenders by requiring fingerprinting and photographs and improving information sharing.

H.4151 allows certain 16- and 17-year-olds charged with serious violent crimes to be prosecuted in adult court when appropriate.

Together, these bills give our justice system better tools to respond to violent crime and help ensure serious offenses carry serious consequences. Both bills now head to the Senate for consideration.

The House also passed the HALO Act (H.4763), a bill I proudly co-sponsored, which better protects the law enforcement officers and first responders who serve our communities every day. This bill creates a 25-foot buffer zone to prevent harassment or interference while they are responding to active situations, allowing them to focus on doing their jobs and protecting lives. It’s a simple but important step to make sure the men and women who put themselves in harm’s way for us have the support and protection they deserve.

Fargo’s, Hyco’s, Rico’s, Coba’s, Wick’s, and Mikka’s Law (H.3034) advanced out of the House Judiciary Subcommittee this week, strengthening penalties for those who harm or kill a law enforcement horse or K9 officer. Handlers and K9 officers from 40 counties across South Carolina came to the State House to advocate for the bill and stand up for the K9s who serve alongside them. These highly trained dogs track dangerous criminals, protect their handlers, and play a vital role in keeping our communities safe.

Street takeovers are reckless and dangerous events that put lives at risk. H.4292 cracks down on these illegal gatherings and holds participants accountable. The bill passed the House Judiciary Criminal Law Subcommittee this week and now moves forward in the legislative process, giving law enforcement stronger tools to stop dangerous behavior and keep our roads safe.

Putting South Carolina First

Chinese Telecommunications Ownership Prohibition (H.4974) passed the House Medical, Military, Public, and Municipal Affairs (3M) Committee this week, taking an important step to protect South Carolina’s military installations and national security. The bill creates a 25-mile buffer zone around state and federal military bases, prohibiting companies owned or controlled by the Chinese Communist Party from owning land for telecommunications or broadcasting towers near these installations. It also requires certain equipment to be replaced with American-made technology installed by U.S. companies, helping ensure critical infrastructure near our bases remains secure.

The House passed H.4982, designating the future Interstate-73 as the PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP HIGHWAY. President Trump played a key role in advancing this project, championing infrastructure that strengthens our economy, supports American workers, and connects communities across the country.

Naming this future interstate in his honor recognizes his leadership and commitment to building a stronger America.

Charlie Hartz: Week 7 Legislative Update

Last week in Columbia, I worked to advance legislation that strengthens public safety, supports our schools, and protects South Carolina values. Through committee work and votes on the House floor, I focused on delivering results that protect your family, defend your freedoms, and strengthen our state’s future.

Here’s what I worked on last week and what it means for you:

South Carolina Jobs First

Finally, the Buy American Iron & Steel Act (H.4709) passed the House unanimously last week. This important legislation ensures taxpayer dollars prioritize American-made iron and steel in state-funded projects, strengthening domestic manufacturing and supporting South Carolina jobs. The House is putting America First — right here in South Carolina!

I also supported advancing the Workforce Readiness bill (H.3197) to better prepare South Carolina students for success after graduation. This legislation strengthens career training, expands pathways to industry credentials, and aligns education with workforce needs. These reforms help students build real skills and help South Carolina build a stronger workforce.

Fighting for Our Students

Last week, I voted to pass the Historic Displays & Chaplains in Schools Act (H.4762). This legislation ensures schools display foundational historical documents — including the Ten Commandments, as part of an educational presentation highlighting the documents that shaped American law and government. It also allows schools to establish volunteer chaplain programs to provide additional support for students.

I believe students should learn the full story of American history and understand the values that built our country. This legislation strengthens civic education and supports students across South Carolina.

The Truth in Public School Grading bill (H.5073) advanced out of the Education & Public Works Committee. Parents deserve transparency and honesty when it comes to their child’s academic progress. This legislation ensures grading policies reflect real achievement and provide families with clear, accurate information, because high standards and honest feedback are essential to preparing students for success in college, careers, and life.

Supporting Our First Responders & Public Safety

Last week, the HALO Act (H.4763), a bill I proudly co-sponsored, advanced out of the full Judiciary Committee, sending a clear message that South Carolina backs the brave men and women who serve on the front lines. By establishing a 25-foot safety radius, this bill ensures law enforcement officers and first responders have the space they need to act quickly, decisively, and safely in high-pressure moments. It also strengthens penalties for those who harass, obstruct, or assault them while they are simply trying to do their job. When lives are on the line, interference isn’t just disruptive, it’s dangerous.

I also supported advancing a comprehensive Juvenile Crime Reform Package (H.4151, H.5120, H.5121) to crack down on serious youth violence and restore order in our communities. These bills ensure violent juvenile offenders face real consequences, strengthen coordination between schools and law enforcement when major crimes occur, and invest in prevention efforts that reinforce discipline and accountability. This is a firm but fair approach, public safety comes first, and serious crimes will carry serious consequences, no matter the offender’s age.

In addition, the Immigration Enforcement bill (H.4764) passed out of Judiciary Subcommittee – another bill I’m co-sponsoring. This legislation strengthens cooperation between state and local law enforcement and federal authorities to ensure individuals who are in our country unlawfully and commit crimes are properly identified and processed. A growing number of law enforcement agencies across our state are already implementing these partnerships and taking proactive steps to uphold the rule of law — and that’s exactly why we are working to pass this legislation statewide: to support their efforts and ensure every community has the tools it needs to keep families safe. Protecting our communities remains a core responsibility, and public safety will always come first.

Charlie Hartz: Week 6 Legislative Update

Dear Constituents,

Last week at the State House, I worked with my colleagues to deliver meaningful results for South Carolina families. I supported and passed legislation to strengthen parental rights, protect our farmers and agricultural community, and advance policies that put South Carolina workers, businesses, and taxpayers first.

Here’s what happened during Week 6:

Protecting Parental Rights

Last week, I co-sponsored and voted to pass the Parental Rights Act (H.4757) with overwhelming support in a 105–1 vote, reaffirming a simple but fundamental principle: parents, not the government, have the primary right to direct the upbringing, education, and healthcare of their children.

This legislation strengthens transparency, reinforces accountability, and ensures parents stay fully informed and involved in decisions affecting their families. South Carolina parents deserve clarity, confidence, and the assurance that their rights remain protected.

Supporting Our Farmers & Agricultural Industry

Last week, I supported and passed the Ban on Lab-Grown Meat bill (H.5096) to protect South Carolina’s farmers and ensure honesty for consumers. This legislation bans the sale of synthetic, lab-grown “fake meat” in our state, defends our agricultural industry from unfair competition, and ensures families know exactly what they are putting on their dinner table.

With this legislation, South Carolina’s agricultural industry is defended, and transparency for consumers is reinforced. The sale of synthetic, lab-grown “fake meat” is banned, ensuring unfair competition is prevented and families can have confidence in the food they put on their dinner table.

The House also passed the Roadside Markets bill (H.5097). Protecting South Carolina’s proud roadside market tradition, this law cuts unnecessary red tape, supports family-run farms, and makes it easier for farmers to sell fresh, South Carolina-grown products directly to consumers. These reforms strengthen local agriculture, support small farm operations, and preserve an important part of our state’s heritage.

Putting South Carolina First

Last week, I supported and the House passed H.3477, legislation that modernizes South Carolina’s unemployment system and protects taxpayers. This reform ties the length of unemployment benefits to economic conditions, shortens benefits when jobs are widely available, and strengthens job-search requirements and fraud prevention.

This approach ensures unemployment benefits serve as temporary support while encouraging a faster return to work and protecting taxpayer dollars.

Additionally, the House Labor, Commerce, and Industry Committee advanced the American Iron and Steel Act (H.4709). This bill prioritizes American-made iron and steel in public projects, ensuring taxpayer dollars support domestic manufacturing and protect American jobs. We are putting America first right here in South Carolina!

The House also passed S.383, recognizing the Prothonotary Warbler as part of South Carolina’s rich natural heritage. This bill reflects pride in our state’s unique wildlife and natural beauty, a reminder that putting South Carolina first also means celebrating what makes our state special.

Responsible Budget Discussions Continue

Last week, the Ways and Means Committee unanimously advanced a $15 billion conservative state budget, and I remained engaged in the process as we prepared for full House debate.

This responsible budget:

- Raises starting teacher pay

- Provides a 2% pay increase for state employees

- Expands school choice through additional scholarship funding

- Delivers approximately $1 billion in tax relief, including income and property tax relief for families and seniors

- Invests in roads, rural infrastructure, higher education, and workforce development

This proposal keeps South Carolina competitive, supports working families, and prepares our state for continued growth. Full House debate is expected to begin March 9.

Charlie Hartz: Week 5 Legislative Update

Dear Constituents,

Last week at the State House, I focused on delivering results where they matter most—cutting taxes for small businesses, restoring transparency and accountability to our judicial system, strengthening public safety, and raising standards in our schools.

Through committee work and votes on the House floor, I worked with my colleagues to advance commonsense, conservative solutions that put South Carolina families first.

Here’s what you should know:

Supporting Small Businesses & Job Creators

Supporting small businesses remains one of my top priorities, and last week we delivered real tax relief for the job creators who power our local economies.

On the House floor, I voted to pass the Small Business Tax Cuts Act (H.5006), a bill I’m proud to sponsor.

More than 99% of South Carolina businesses are small businesses—from local diners to neighborhood auto shops—and this legislation gives them room to grow. The bill exempts the first $10,000 of assets from the Business Personal Property Tax, ending a tax that penalizes owners for investing in their own success.

This reform allows small businesses to keep more of what they earn so they can reinvest, hire employees, and continue serving their communities.

Judicial Reform

Last week, I also sponsored and passed the Judicial Merit Selection Reform Bill (H.4755), a major step toward restoring transparency and accountability in South Carolina’s judicial selection process.

This reform strengthens the separation of powers, restores balance and clarifies authority within the Governor’s Office, and improves public trust in how judges are selected. South Carolinians deserve confidence that the judicial system operates fairly, transparently, and with clear accountability—and this legislation moves us in that direction.

Raising Standards & Tenure Accountability

Raising standards in education and protecting taxpayer accountability remain critical priorities.

I supported the Tenure Accountability Bill (H.4761), which requires annual performance evaluations for all public university faculty and regular post-tenure reviews for tenured professors. Taxpayers deserve assurance that publicly funded educators continue meeting clear, measurable standards throughout their careers.

Additionally, the Public School Grading Reform Bill (H.5073) advanced in subcommittee. This legislation ensures grades reflect actual student achievement—not inflated metrics that undermine long-term success. Parents deserve an honest picture of how their children are performing, and students deserve standards that prepare them for college, careers, and real life.

Tough on Crime & Juvenile Reform

Keeping our communities safe requires accountability, clarity, and common sense—especially when serious crimes involve juveniles.

Last week, the House Judiciary Committee advanced a comprehensive juvenile crime reform package—H.5117, H.5120, and H.5121—and I support these measures to protect families and strengthen public safety. These bills ensure due process when courts consider transferring serious juvenile offenders to adult court, improve communication between schools and law enforcement when serious offenses occur, and strengthen responses to repeat and violent juvenile crime.

The package also invests in proven prevention strategies, including mentoring, job training, recreation, and family support services, to help steer at-risk youth away from crime before it starts.

This balanced approach delivers accountability for violent offenders while expanding early intervention and prevention. Public safety comes first, and serious crimes must carry serious consequences—regardless of age.

Before any legislative updates, I want to take a moment to thank our utility workers, first responders, and SCDOT road crews for their long hours and dedication in keeping our roads and communities safe during last weekend’s winter weather! We appreciate their continued service to our state.

This week at the State House, I continued advancing conservative priorities focused on supporting small businesses, protecting life, and giving parents the tools they need to protect their children. Through committee work and votes on the House floor, I worked alongside my colleagues to deliver real progress for South Carolina families—from tax relief for job creators to stronger public safety protections and greater accountability.

Supporting Small Businesses and Job Creators

Small businesses are the backbone of South Carolina’s economy, and this week we took meaningful action to help job creators grow and succeed.

The Ways and Means Committee passed legislation to cut taxes and reduce burdens on small businesses. Small businesses make up more than 99% of all businesses in South Carolina and employ over 42% of our state’s workforce. This legislation exempts the first $10,000 of small business assets, saving employers time and money on paperwork, cutting costly red tape, and ending a burdensome tax on investments.

These reforms encourage local job growth and help keep South Carolina competitive and open for opportunity.

Protecting Children & Strengthening Public Safety

This week, legislation, which I proudly co-sponsored, that increases penalties for the sexual exploitation of minors advanced in the House Judiciary Subcommittee. This bill strengthens criminal penalties to ensure punishment fits the severity of these crimes and makes clear that “mistake of age” does not excuse the creation or distribution of exploitative material. South Carolina will not tolerate the exploitation of children.

The Judiciary Subcommittee also advanced legislation to better protect children online by addressing the mental health and safety risks posed by addictive social media platforms. This bill requires reasonable age verification, parental consent, and greater transparency—giving parents more control over how and when their children access social media.

These commonsense protections help curb screen addiction and safeguard the well-being of South Carolina’s youth.

Protecting Life & Women’s Safety

Protecting life and women’s safety remains a top priority for me this session.

This week, the House passed legislation addressing chemically induced abortions. The bill closes a loophole that has allowed abortion pills to enter South Carolina with little accountability and prevents out-of-state actors from flooding our state with dangerous abortion drugs. It classifies mifepristone as a Schedule IV drug, ensuring proper oversight and prioritizing patient safety.

This legislation puts women’s health first—not the profits of out-of-state providers—and reinforces South Carolina’s commitment to protecting life.

Other Bills Advancing Through the Legislative Process

In addition to the work above, several other important bills continued moving forward this week:

A bipartisan bill (S.405) advanced to strengthen South Carolina’s child abuse homicide statute by increasing the covered age from under 11 to under 18. This change ensures stronger penalties and accountability for those whose abusive or neglectful actions result in the death of a child. The House passed this bill unanimously, and it continues moving through the legislative process.

I continue supporting legislation that protects parental rights (H.4757), affirming that moms and dads—not the government—are best positioned to make decisions about their children’s upbringing, education, and well-being.

Legislation strengthening workforce readiness (H. 3197) also continued advancing. This effort helps ensure students graduate with the skills needed to succeed in today’s economy while meeting the workforce needs of South Carolina employers.

The House advanced legislation recognizing the U.S. Space Force (H.4586) under South Carolina law. This update ensures Space Force members and their families receive the same legal protections and benefits as other service members.

Legislation expanding certificate-of-need exemptions for veterans’ homes (H.4799) also moved forward. This reform cuts red tape and makes it easier to provide care for the men and women who have served our country.

Supporting Small Businesses

I sponsored major legislation this week aimed at delivering real relief for local job creators and family-owned businesses. Small businesses are the backbone of South Carolina’s economy, and I continue pushing policies that help them keep more of what they earn.

The Small Business Tax Cuts Bill exempts the first $10,000 of business personal property taxes, providing meaningful savings for small businesses across our state. This legislation helps business owners reinvest, hire, and grow while taking a practical step toward a more affordable and competitive South Carolina.

️ Roads & Infrastructure

This week, House leadership introduced legislation to improve how South Carolina plans for and delivers road projects. This proposal reflects months of work by the SCDOT Ad Hoc Committee, including public hearings across the state and extensive conversations with citizens, business owners, local leaders, and transportation experts.

I support this effort because it focuses on cutting red tape, improving transparency, reducing congestion, and moving road projects faster—so families spend less time in traffic and more time at home. This legislation takes a thoughtful, responsible approach to fixing our roads while prioritizing safety, accountability, and long-term growth.

Standing Up for Girls & Students

This week, I am proud to announce that the House passed the Student Physical Privacy Act, legislation to protect student privacy and maintain clear, common-sense standards in our schools. Every child deserves a safe learning environment, and no student should have to sacrifice privacy in locker rooms or restrooms.

I’ve heard directly from parents across our community, and they’ve been clear: they want schools focused on learning, safety, and respect. This legislation reflects that common sense, protects girls, provides clarity for schools, and now moves to the Senate for consideration.

Protecting Kids & Public Safety

Legislation addressing intoxicating hemp products and protecting children continues to move forward this session. Products that can impair or intoxicate should not be sold or marketed in ways that put children at risk.

The bill has received a favorable report from the House Judiciary Committee and reflects coordination with law enforcement, including SLED, and the Senate to ensure strong, enforceable protections for families and communities.

⚖️ Strengthening Our Courts & Judicial Accountability

This session also includes important work to strengthen trust and accountability in South Carolina’s judicial system. Lawmakers advanced reforms to improve transparency in judicial selection, reinforce the separation of powers, and ensure proper oversight.

We also moved forward with reforms to strengthen standards for magistrates—the judges many South Carolinians interact with most often—so they meet clear qualifications and operate under consistent expectations. In addition, lawmakers addressed outdated magistrate court fees that haven’t changed in decades, helping courts function more effectively while maintaining fairness for the public.

️ A Historic State of the State Address

This week, I had the honor of attending Governor Henry McMaster’s ninth State of the State address. It was a strong night for South Carolina and a reminder of the steady, conservative leadership guiding our state forward.

Governor McMaster emphasized putting South Carolina first, cutting taxes, strengthening public safety, fixing our roads, and growing our economy responsibly. His message was clear: think big, be bold, and keep building a state where families can live, work, and thrive.

Because of that leadership—and the work underway this session—South Carolina stands stronger today and well positioned for an even brighter future.

This week at the State House was another busy one as the General Assembly continued its work during the second year of the legislative session. I spent the week engaged in committee meetings and discussions on legislation focused on protecting families, strengthening public safety, supporting American jobs, and ensuring state government works responsibly and effectively for the people it serves.

Winter Weather Warning
As we head into the weekend, I want to encourage everyone to stay safe and prepared as winter weather approaches. Governor Henry McMaster has declared a State of Emergency, and state and local emergency officials are monitoring conditions closely. Please stay informed through trusted sources, make preparations early, and take this storm seriously as forecasts continue to develop.

Protecting Children and Strengthening Parental Rights
Protecting children and strengthening parental rights was a major focus of my work this week. I was proud to support two key pieces of legislation this week: the Parental Rights Act (H.4757), which has been referred to committee, and the South Carolina Student Physical Privacy Act (H.4756), which passed out of the House Judiciary Committee.

These bills are aimed at safeguarding student privacy in schools while reinforcing transparency and parental involvement in decisions related to education and healthcare. I believe parents deserve to be informed, respected, and involved when it comes to their children, and these measures reflect that principle. Committee hearings brought strong participation from families, students, and advocates from across South Carolina, and I expect discussions to continue as the legislation advances.

Protecting Life and Public Safety

House Republicans also continued advancing efforts this week to protect children and families from dangerous and intoxicating substances The House Judiciary Committee heard testimony highlighting growing concerns surrounding hemp-derived products and the importance of keeping these products out of the reach of children. These discussions reinforced the need for clear standards and strong safeguards focused on safety and accountability.

In addition, the Judiciary Committee heard extensive testimony on the Abortion-Inducing Drugs Act (H.4760). Testimony focused on clarifying state law, strengthening enforcement, and ensuring existing protections are clearly understood and applied. Protecting life remains an important issue, and this legislation will continue to be carefully reviewed as it moves through the committee process.

Putting South Carolina First
This week, legislation requiring the use of U.S.-produced iron and steel (H.4709) in state-funded public works projects advanced out of subcommittee and was referred to the House Labor, Commerce and Industry Committee.

This proposal is focused on strengthening domestic manufacturing, protecting critical supply chains, and ensuring taxpayer dollars support American workers and industries. As South Carolina continues to grow, policies like this help reinforce a reliable workforce and support long-term economic stability while keeping our state competitive.

⚖️ Judicial Reform and Conservative Principles
Several additional bills advanced this week reflecting a continued focus on good governance and public safety. I had the privilege to advance the Judicial Selection Reform bill (H.4755) which passed out of subcommittee; continuing efforts to strengthen accountability and fairness in South Carolina’s judicial selection process.

The House also advanced legislation recognizing members of the United States Space Force under South Carolina law (H.4586), ensuring they are included in important protections and benefits. Additionally, the School Volunteer Chaplains and Historical Displays bill (H.4762) passed out of subcommittee, allowing schools to establish volunteer chaplain programs and display historical documents, such as the Ten Commandments, that reflect the foundations of our nation’s history and law.

Making South Carolina More Affordable
Work also continued this week on the Insurance Rate Reduction and Policy Holder Protection Act (H.4817), a comprehensive proposal aimed at providing greater oversight and consumer protections in the insurance market. The bill includes provisions focused on strengthening anti-fraud efforts, increasing transparency in rate-setting, and authorizing enhanced fraud investigations.

As this legislation continues to be debated, the focus remains on easing financial pressures on families and ensuring the insurance system operates fairly and responsibly.

This Week’s Legislative Wins – House Bills Update
Progress continued this week on legislation supporting small businesses and lowering costs for families. The Small Business Regulatory Freedom Act (H.3021), which I proudly supported—previously passed the House, advanced in the Senate Judiciary Committee—another step toward reducing unnecessary regulations on job creators.

Additionally, the Boat Tax Relief Act (H.3858), which passed the House last year, advanced through the Senate Finance Committee on Thursday, moving closer to providing tax relief and helping make South Carolina more affordable.
